Rounder eyes, yes. A slightly open grinning mouth with tongue, much like Hero's photo, would definitely present a happier/friendlier look to kids. As far as smaller paws go, I tend to prefer proportionally larger paws on small dogs ... but that's just me. :)
Other nits you can choose to ignore if you like ... the forehead seems a bit on the high side in the sketch, and the nose could be slightly smaller in proportion to the eyes. (When I look at Hero's photo, what pops out are his eyes and smile ... the nose is secondary.)
I agree -- maybe an open mouth with a tongue hanging out, with that little smile he has on his face, just like the picture you have posted on the blog? This little puppt looks a tad... intimidating.

First sketch. We're thinking pointier ears/nose, rounder eyes, somehow a smile or mouth open, smaller paws, fluffier tail. Any other adjustments?
