Because celluloid plagiarism is funny.

Since they finally cleared up the money that should have been paid to Winston Groom for Forrest Gump, I hope to see Gump & Co. put to film sometime.

Wasn't this great? They didn't even mention the hummingbird/feather motif.

Of course Roth wrote both so he gets a little slack. A little.

Yeah, what do you think of that Josh? If you were hired to write something you'd already written before and disguise it well...I don't know...take the money? It's an interesting moral dilema...stealing from yourself. I mean, some artists only have one thing to say and say the same thing over and over again...but that's not Roth. Ah, moral conundrums. I just love that Be Funny or Die called them on it to say we're not all stupid and unaware of the chicanery...

Well, John Fogerty was once famously sued for copyright infringement for writing a song which sounded too much like a Creedence song...WHICH HE WROTE! (he eventually won the case)

You're right, Roth is a brilliant writer who doesn't always work in the same vein. I'm not sure what happened with Benjamin's Butt; the short story is really just a strange seed of an idea, and there were so many alternate avenues and ideas that could have been covered - "Youth is wasted on the young" and all that - but this film just didn't seem interested in exploring such stuff. What did you make of it?
