Short Film

My screenwriting friends realized between all of us we had enough experience and equipment to make a great short film...so we're all on board now to start shooting our own work.

We participated in a short film festival this weekend. My friend Sharri produced and directed. She got the crew, equipment, and cast together while I was up in NoCal at Mom's memorial.

Then Friday night at 7 pm we received our instructions: genre = mockumentary, length 4-8 minutes, must include a character named DJ Chris Wiffle, a prop boat, and the line "Where on Earth is your faith?"

I wrote the script, and we emailed it out to the actors and crew around ten pm. We called it "Aberrations Vol. IV"...it's a faux Scientology instuctional video.

Saturday we started shooting at noon. Finished pick up shots on Sunday, handed it off to a friend of Sharri's to edit. Monday we went to another fab friend's house for the sound mix and to finish paperwork. By Monday night at 6 pm, the project was done and FED-EXed off to the contest.

Sharri is going to convert the short to Quicktime tonight, so you'll all get to see it soon! It was a blast. Everyone was wonderful, and added something amazing creatively.

We're all feeling very inspired to do a few more shorts and then tackle a feature.

Oh boy... you may want to check recent news articles about a site that got asked by the "official" Church of Scientology to cease and desist.

Apparently, some folks put together a purely comedic site called the Church of ScienTOMogy. Maybe the "Tom Electrocutes Oprah with Sith Lightning" bit was offensive to them...

I don't know the facts, BUT... to me, it sounds CLEARLY like a parody, and thus not subject to legitiamte claims of copyright infringement, but the COS was still ticked off.

Anyway, looking fwd to the flick!

christina -- True enough. I gave up my artistic aspirations in college when I got too poultry-like in my risk assessment.

Ever forward, kid sis. Looking fwd to seeing the short.

If only that were true. But then again, if it were, they wouldn't be artists, they'd be working for some higher calling, such as marketing.

What fun. Reminds me of aa similar thing the sidewalk film people do down here in Birmingham, the sidewalk scramble.

When do we get to watch?

Sounds so good! Can't wait to see it. By the way, if you're interested in a good read on a contemporary American religion, I'd recommend "Under the Banner of Heaven" (Krakauer). It's a phenomenal book - and I think it's quite fair in its historical/contemporary portrayals of Mormonism, although the Mormon Church apparently was less than happy with the final product.
